Houston News Conference on Moving Scams Latest Sign of Growing Joint Public - Private Efforts to Fight Fraud

A Houston news conference today warning consumers about moving scams is the latest example of growing public-private partnerships between professional movers and state regulators, according to the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA).

May is National Moving Month, which kicks off the busiest season of the year for relocations, but also often means a proliferation of unlicensed, untrained, rogues out to rip off unsuspecting customers.

"We're seeing more regional moving associations working together with their state regulators to get the word out that consumers should always look for movers who are in full compliance with applicable laws," said Linda Bauer Darr, AMSA president and CEO, who appeared at today's event at a Houston branch of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV).

"For moves within Texas, that means companies which have been screened and designated as Pinnacle Movers by the Southwest Movers Association (SMA). For interstate moves, it means companies which have been screened and certified as ProMovers by AMSA."

At today's news conference, Darr saluted the joint effort by SMA and TxDMV to publicize how important it is for consumers to check to make sure they're dealing with a reputable, legitimate mover, and praised a new state law cracking down on con artists.

"The new law is an extremely important step to protect the public. I urge other states to follow your example," said Darr. "Frankly even one of these crooks is one too many. Even so, there are too many for law enforcement to be the only solution.& It's why our industry at the state and national levels has stepped up to the plate to help consumers easily identify honest, quality movers."

A coalition of AMSA members is funding a series of ads this month in USA Today touting the value of always shopping for a ProMover when moving between states.

Also speaking at today's news conference were SMA Executive Director John D. Esparza, TxDMV board member Johnny Walker, TxDMV Enforcement Director Bill Harbeson, and Houston Police Department Assistant Chief John Trevino.
